Mario Awards

From Userpedia
Jump to: navigation, search

The Mario Awards are a yearly festival held on the Super Mario Wiki to celebrate the Wiki's anniversary. The show consists of awards about the Mario series, Userpedia and The 'Shroom. The results are presented by users, who write scripts or make comics. 2010's Awards saw the first playable game as a presentation. The award show was the brainchild of Wayoshi, who was the sole director of the first three shows. In the 2010 ceremony, Ralphfan and Stooben Rooben pretty much took over the show due to Wayoshi's retirement, although Wayoshi still had a considerable amount of power. Following the 2010 Awards, Stooben quit the Awards Committee, Wayoshi was removed from his position, and Ralph named Super Mario Bros. the new sub-director. In 2012, after several clashes with the Committee members, Ralphfan was demoted from the Awards Committee and Turboo appointed Director. Ralph was reinstated as an ordinary AC member.

Process

Meetings

In April and May of each year, an Awards Committee forms and meets in #mwikiawards on Friday nights from 8-10 pm Eastern time. There, they discuss awards and their nominees. From 2007-08, these meetings were closed to the public. In 2009, the AC was disbanded and meetings were public. In 2010, an AC was formed, but meetings were still open to the public.

Polls

In mid-June, after all the meetings are finished, the director(s) of the Awards create the ballot for the year's Awards. In 2007 and 2008, voting was done via email. Since 2009, voting has been done via Polldaddy, which has greatly increased the number of voters. Polls close in mid-July.

Presentations

In mid-July, sign-ups open on the Wiki for presentations. To present, a user must be active on the Wiki and Forum. A presentation can be a story, comic, image, game, etc. to present the results to the users of the Wiki. 2010's Awards saw the first playable game presentation in Awards history, made by Stooben. The game consisted of a fight with Bowser and also revealed the top three vote-getters in the process.

Awards Show

Around August 12, the anniversary of the Wiki's creation, the Awards show is held. The show takes roughly 5 hours and is held in a forum thread, with users guessing results and commentating on the Awards in the forum thread and in a chatroom party, held in #mwikiawards. On Awards day, many retired users pay a visit to #mwikiawards.

History

2007

Wayoshi came up with the idea of the Awards in early 2007 based off of a similar event on another website he frequented. The first Awards Committee met ten times between March 2007 and August 2007 to pick the 30 awards and the nominees for each award. On June 10, the polls opened. Users could vote by e-mailing their picks to Wayoshi. Each award had eight nominees, though users could also vote for write-ins. 62 users voted in the inaugural awards. On July 16, sign-ups were opened for presentations. Presenters were then sent the results for their presentation on the forums. The show was generally punctual, and was a big hit with the users who showed up in the chatroom and on the forum for the big event. Though the show could've been a disaster, Wayoshi made up for all shortcomings, using his administrative powers in many cases to prevent any problems.

2008

The 2008 Awards' biggest change was the introduction of 10 Userpedia Awards. Wayoshi was against expansion, and would have preferred to stick with the original 30 Mario Awards, but the rest of the AC created ten awards for the Wiki's fanon site, ranging from Favorite Fad to Favorite Comic. Of the 30 Mario Awards, just three were changed, though many nominees were altered. 93 users participated in Mario Awards voting and 56 in Userpedia. Though multiple backup presentations were used, the show was once again a major success.

2009

The 2009 Awards once again expanded, this time introducing 10 Awards showcasing the worst in the Mario series, called the Fail Awards. Everybody became an "Honorary Awards Committee Member," and meetings were open to the entire Wiki community. Five new Mario Awards and one Userpedia Award were replaced. After a failed attempt in 2008, Wayoshi finally was able to get a Mario Kart Wii tournament together, though a Super Smash Bros. Brawl tournament was unable to be organized. Also introduced in 2009 after a failed attempt in 2008 was a result-guessing contest. Ralphfan narrowly defeated Stooben in the contest, and Tucayo finished third. Though the first two award shows did a great job sticking to schedule, the 2009 Awards ended over two hours late. The show was delayed by Plumber, who had other commitments, and Wayoshi, who took a ten-minute break to watch the end of a Red Sox game. Wayoshi also fought with Girrrtacos, who was supposed to do a presentation for A1, Favorite Soundtrack, but he didn't finish it on time, and eventually scrapped his idea. Wayo then posted a simple script with the results. Despite all the negativity, the show was still a gigantic success. Voting increased by 800-1000% in the Mario Awards and 200-300% in the Userpedia Awards due to Wayoshi's switch of the polls from email to Polldaddy, in a format similar to the format used for the Main Page polls. Chatroom activity also increased greatly, with over 30 users appearing in #mwikiawards during the show.

2010

Following Wayoshi's retirement in 2009, Ralphfan, Stooben Rooben, and Wayoshi all co-directed the Awards in 2010 (albeit Wayoshi did significantly less than he had in previous years and offered some guidance throughout the process). The Awards Committee was re-introduced, but meetings were still open to all members. AC members still had an underground board and had the final say when it came to voting. Throughout the 2010 meetings, Wayoshi's attendance was sporadic. Ralphfan was also banned from the forums during part of the meetings and was nearly fired from AC. The number of Userpedia Awards was reduced from 10 to 5, and five new 'Shroom Awards were created. Because of an error Ralphfan made when setting up the polls, most of the Mario and Fail Awards received roughly 25% of the amount of votes they had collected in 2009. The Userpedia Awards didn't lose many voters. Stooben Rooben and Ralphfan each made multiple backup presentations for writers who couldn't complete theirs.

Despite the decline in voters, activity in the chatroom and on the forums continued to rise. The show began at 4:30 Eastern time, a half-hour earlier than the previous year. All presentations were posted within two minutes of the scheduled time and the final presentation was posted fifteen minutes early. Throughout the duration of the show in the chatroom, Uniju was spamming, flooding, and flaming. This annoyed many of the other chatters. Following the show, in an unrelated incident, Uniju was banned from the forums. Uniju went on to insult Stooben's presentation for A30, Favorite Game, which was a playable game that included a fight with Bowser. Wayoshi (who was unable to attend the show due to a family reunion) came on to the forums the next day and also told Stooben he did a poor job with the presentation. Enraged by Wayoshi's criticism and lack of activity, as well as Uniju's actions, both Stooben Rooben and Edofenrir quit the Awards Committee.

On October 15, 2010, Ralphfan took over the Awards by changing the passwords to the GoogleDocs, Polldaddy and Twitter accounts for the Mario Awards and by taking over #mwikiawards, which was dropped earlier in the day after Wayo's nick was dropped from the DarkMyst server; he had not logged on for 30 days. Ralph then named SMB his sub-director.

2011

After the polemic surround Stooben's A30 presentation in the 2010 Mario Awards, both him and Wayoshi left the Awards Committee, which left Ralphfan as the sole Director, with Super Mario Bros. being appointed Sub-Director.

The sign-ups for the AC started off slowly, but the 2011 Commitee eventually became the largest one, with 14 members. The overall number of awards was increased by 10 (5 Fail Awards and 5 'Shroom Awards). The Lifetime Achievement Award was introduced in 2011, and its first winner was the hard-working member of the SMW community, Super Mario Bros. Over 45,000 votes were recorded for this ceremony, the highest number of votes so far, and around 4.5 times the amount of votes recorded in the 2010 Awards. The Ceremony took place August 12, 2011. It ran from 4pm to 10pm (EDT) and ended on time for the first time in the Mario Awards history. Ralphfan, SMB and Tucayo returned as hosts, while Gamefreak75 replaced Marioguy1 as host of the Userpedia Awards. A Donation Drive was featured on the 2011 Awards Ceremony, but wasn't as successful as expected.

2012

After complications arose with Ralphfan, who directed the 2011 Ceremony, Turboo took over the AC Director role. She was aided by Awards Sub-Director, Super Mario Bros.; Official Organizer, TheGreatBlockyBoo; and the largest Awards Committee so far, being comprised of around 30 users. Due to their misbehavior and lack of cooperation, Ralphfan and FireEevee were kicked out of the Committee. Pyro and skulldug (the latter of whom wasn't in the AC) were excluded from the tokens system after cheating in the Awards Mafia, co-hosted by Smasher and Stooben Rooben.

After much discussion, the AC settled for an unprecedented reduction in the Mario Awards, bringing them down to 25 awards. Fail and Userpedia Awards got a 5-awards increment, leaving them at 15 and 10, respectively, and the 'Shroom Awards stayed at 10.

Aside from the Main Ceremony, there were 4 additional events: The Team Fortress 2 tournament, won by Garlic Man, Groden and S-Y; the Mario Kart 7 tournament, won by Lakituthequick; the traditional Guess The Results, won by Gamefreak75; and the Awards Mafia game, won by the Werewolves, Mafia, MST3K and MarioMaster15.

Following a discussion that arose after the 2011 Ceremony, an Awards Director Election was held on the September issue of The 'Shroom. The Turboo/Superchao ticket was the only to run, therefore winning the Election.
